At a recent auction in Paris, a very unusual lot was sold - slippers from the silk of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. According to information provided by BBC News, the queen’s wardrobe was sold for 50 thousand euros - an amount that several times exceeded the wildest expectations of the auction organizers. In addition to shoes, the new owner of royal slippers received an appropriate certificate confirming the authenticity of the lot.

The bidding was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the death of Marie Antoinette, which was executed on October 16, 1793. In addition to silk slippers, many other items that belonged to the Queen herself and members of her family were put up for auction.

According to the organizers of the Paris auction, most of the historical lots had unexpected success with buyers. Bids during the bidding could be made through their own representatives, using the phone. This is how the current owner of Marie Antoinette slippers acted. However, apart from this information, nothing else is known about the identity of the buyer.

Recall that the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Franz I and his faithful wife Maria Theresa, Marie Antoinette became Queen of France after her marriage to the French King Louis XVI. In addition to her tragic death, she became famous for her love of luxury and numerous outfits. During the French uprising of 1792, Marie Antoinette was imprisoned with her whole family, and then executed.
